The short answer
Position the TV stand around your usual seats and the room's traffic routes, not around the largest empty wall. The screen should be comfortable to watch from where you actually sit, and it should not be the first thing you see from the doorway. Test the position with tape or a temporary box before buying or rearranging anything.
What to check before deciding
Start from the seated position. Sit where you normally watch and note where your eyes fall, what sits behind and beside the screen, and whether a window or lamp would reflect in it or pull your attention away. Then walk the routes through the room with the stand's footprint marked on the floor, including the space needed to open drawers or cupboards along the same wall. If the television is used only occasionally, a position that lets it recede, off to one side or angled toward the seating, keeps the main arrangement centred on conversation or reading.
This approach does not apply when the television is wall-mounted, or when a fireplace, window, radiator or doorway already fixes the only sensible position. In those cases, choose a stand that fits the space you have rather than forcing a layout the room cannot support. Check the manufacturer's stated dimensions, weight limits and ventilation clearances before buying, and ask a qualified person about anything involving wiring, outlets or cable lengths.
A practical checklist
- Mark the stand's footprint on the floor with tape, then sit in your usual seat and walk the normal routes before moving or buying anything.
- Note windows and lamps that could reflect in the screen from your seated position, and check the manufacturer's ventilation guidance before boxing the stand in.
- If the screen lands in a sightline from the doorway, try shifting or angling the stand along the same wall before considering a smaller television.
These are general planning ideas. For an individual product, confirm its exact dimensions, care instructions and installation requirements.
