The short answer
Centre the TV stand on the screen’s viewing axis from your usual seats, not on the wall itself, and move the side table elsewhere before you shift the stand far enough to make viewing uncomfortable. Shift the stand only when the seats can shift with it or the screen remains comfortable from where people actually sit. The trade-off is a balanced-looking wall against convenient storage at the screen’s edge.
What to check before deciding
Why the seating axis matters more than the wall centre
A wall centre is a drawing convention; the practical reference is the line from the main seat to the screen centre. In a room where a doorway or a fixed chair already pushes the seating off-centre, a wall-centred stand can make the screen feel turned away even though the cabinet looks tidy. Mark the seat centre and screen centre on the floor with removable tape, then compare the stand’s midpoint with that line. If the only side-table spot requires a large offset, keep the stand on the viewing line and place the table beyond the stand’s outer edge or elsewhere.
When an offset TV stand is the better compromise
Offset the stand when television viewing is secondary in that room and the side table supports a routine you use more often, such as a reading chair, a lamp or a place to set a drink. In that case, check the view from the seats you use for watching and confirm that the stand’s cables and back remain accessible; an offset that presses the cabinet into a corner or blocks a socket may create a different problem. The advice does not apply if the television is rarely watched or the seats move for different activities: then choose the layout that supports the room’s main use and keep the screen placement flexible.
A practical checklist
- Use removable floor tape to mark the centre of the main watching seat and the centre of the screen, then compare both with the stand’s midpoint before moving anything heavy.
- If a side table is competing for wall space, test it first at the far end of the stand rather than between the stand and the sofa; check that it can be reached without leaning across the screen.
- Confirm the stand’s exact width and the position of its cable openings with the manufacturer before choosing an offset, because a shifted cabinet can put a socket or cable route out of easy reach.
These are general planning ideas. For an individual product, confirm its exact dimensions, care instructions and installation requirements.
